A blast from the past

A blast from the past

We were recently contacted by a former resident of Gotham, Ann Barradell-Black, who comments:

“I was very touched when I discovered in your short history of the cricket club a reference to my late father, Harry Barradell, as a ‘stalwart of the club’ who was elected Saturday captain in 1960.  I still have the various tankards he won at different times, including one for his first century for the club, that same year.  (He was celebrating my birth, he claimed)

We left Gotham in 1968, but it was always a very important place for him.  And those names – the Powdrills, Arthur Dabell, Les Talbot and the like – all very familiar to me nearly 50 years on.  Such nostalgia!

Would you be interested in a couple more photos from that era for your website?  I have one of a team with Dad in the centre which is probably the Saturday team of that era.  Dad also played lots of cricket for British Gypsum, and previously for a side in Nottingham (alongside Henry Voce – brother of the rather more famous bodyline veteran Bill) – but I know that that this photo is of Gotham CC as it also features John Fletcher, father of my old friend Cheryl – who I think has been even more of a stalwart over the years, as scorer for the club and indefatigable Forest supporter!  Pity I have so few pictures actually of the rec.

With best wishes to Gotham village and the club, from a misplaced Cuckoo!”

One photo I am sure is Gotham CC around 1960 (my dad centre front, with bat; Cheryl’s dad third from right on the back row).  Particularly like the home made sightscreen

One that I’m not sure about – maybe a Nottm team.  My dad at the back, second from right.  Back right is Henry Voce.  Looks to be a year or two earlier, if Dad’s hair is anything to go by!)

One of my Dad at Tutbury CC after he finally realised that his knees were no longer up to hours keeping wicket!  Probably 1980s some time?
